Local Law 47 — Accessible Entrance and Elevator Signage

All buildings must post International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA) signage at accessible entrances and directional signage from inaccessible entrances to the nearest accessible entrance. Accessible elevator directional signage must be posted in every elevator lobby.

Penalty structure

Non-compliance with LL47 can result in the following penalties:

  • DOB violation for missing or non-compliant signage.

Exemptions

  • Buildings that are fully accessible at every entrance may qualify for simplified signage.

Recent updates and amendments

DOB updated the accessible signage specification (pictogram size, contrast, mounting height) in 2023.
