Who is covered
Buildings whose fire-safety systems or staffing require a held Certificate of Fitness — high-rise, sprinklered, or commercial/institutional buildings.
What the law requires
- Identify which C of F categories your systems/staffing require (e.g., S-95).
- Track each holder's expiration; FDNY mails renewal notices ~90 days before expiry.
- Renew before expiration to avoid a coverage gap and late penalty.
Filing frequency and deadlines
Penalty structure
Non-compliance with C of F can result in the following penalties:
- Operating a regulated system without a valid Certificate of Fitness is an FDNY violation.
Exemptions
- Buildings whose operations require no Certificate of Fitness.
Recent updates and amendments
